When we asked my eldest daughter what she wanted for Christmas this week, she couldn’t really think of much.
“I don’t know if there’s anything I really want.” she said. “I just want us all to be there together and for it all to be magical and sparkly and to have the lovely Christmas feeling.”
Now, before you get carried away with thinking that I may have managed to raise a non-materialistic angel (as I allowed myself to do for a few hours) let me clear this up a bit. My daughter doesn’t just want the Christmas feeling for Christmas. While a lot of it is about the magic, the lights, the music, the happy family… as she explained to us when we pushed her for more information later:
“You know. I want there to be lots of lovely surprises in my stocking… Lots of presents to open… And some really good Christmas crackers.”

So, as ever with this daughter (this is the one who made US play with her toys while she just watched) not only does she want to have everything that her heart might desire, but she’d like somebody else to do the desiring for her. Oh, and you’d better get the right things!
Because isn’t that the whole problem with Christmas presents: Everybody longs for lovely surprises but often what we end up with is mild disappointment bordering on horror and emotional shock.
I know that a lot of the shock for me is over all the wasted money, and all the tonnes of junk that will later end up on landfills. I stare open-mouthed in horror every year at the pre-packaged gifts that you can grab off the shelves of the mini dart board, Wallace and Gromit slippers or bacon-flavoured toothpaste variety.
