The life-questioning, behaviour-questioning messages of these ancient Egyptian cards have had a positive effect on me
I hope they may contain a few pertinent messages for you...
Egyptian Tarot cards?! Wendy, you’ve gone crazy!
I know, I know, I know. But I can honestly say that it wasn’t my choice. It just happened to me.
You see, I was sitting at my desk this morning when my eyes alighted on the faded old box of beautifully illustrated Egyptian cards that a boyfriend bought me for my 17th birthday.
I remember the occasion well because it also taught me that subtle hint-dropping was an insufficient answer to the male whine of ‘I don’t know what to buy you for your birthday’. In those days I quickly realised that it would have to come down to a case of dragging them to the shops and pointing silently at the desired objects. These days I just send an email with a link to the necessary online shopping trolley.
But anyway… the point for today is actually that I picked up the pack, dusted them off (says a lot for my housework!) and chose ten cards for us. I have forgotten all the ins and outs of how to read the cards but something lead me to do it in this way.
It is my belief that the cards do not have a superpower that enables them to see the truth or tell the future but that they have been created by very clever people in such as a way as to afford the questioner great insight into their own lives.
So, out of a mind-tickling interest in wanting to hear things said about us, here’s a reading of the cards that came up:
Card 1. The Reaping Skeleton: This card pictures a skeleton armed with a scythe and symbolises Death mowing down human beings whose heads, feet and hands are constantly born again.
But don’t let that put you off. More reassuringly, the interpretation of this card means that we must raise our minds above earthly things, otherwise the bitterness of our disappointment will shorten our days.
Look to how you feel about your daily life right now. Perhaps there is something about the way you are living that means you are already rising above the mundane details. Or perhaps this card is inviting you to look above or behind them or to see a beauty beyond or inside of them?
If we expect more from our lives than what we have then we will experience disappointment. The most glorious beauty of life, however, is available to everybody.
Card 2. The Crown of the Magi: I particularly like on this card the wreath made out of lotus flowers that is the magic chain that unites all beings, all things and all ideas. Underneath the wreath a young girls sits playing a harp of three strings, the image of the triple harmony within man: Soul, Mind and Body.
Acting as an effective contrast to the reaping skeleton, this card means that you may reach the greatest height to which man may aspire. It promises that your most ambitious desires will be realised and that your final success will only be limited by your wishes.
This card gives you a message to help you face the obstacles that lie just ahead.
Card 3. The Two Swords: A simple picture with a simple message. This card tells you that if you persist in the attitude that you currently have towards it, a certain partnership or relationship that you are involved in will not go smoothly. Many obstacles will be thrown in your way.
What about the way you are setting off on this partnership or relationship is dooming it to go wrong? Think of how you should act to get the best outcome for you.
Card 4. With the fourth card I am looking for events in the past that are having an influence on this situation right now. The Arcane XVIII or The Twilight pictures two dogs in front of two pyramids. One of the pyramids is white and is the emblem of Truth, the other pyramid is black and is the emblem of error. The two dogs represent Good and Evil.
There is the feeling with this card that you feel that things will naturally conspire against you or be more difficult than they will. You may also, perhaps, expect a certain kind of behaviour from or relationship with others that is more about your perception of the situation than The Truth.
Card 5. The fifth card represents recent past events. The Slave of the Scepter warns you to beware of foolish projects.
Are you undertaking too much, perhaps? Putting hope in a pipe dream? Or letting yourself into trouble?
Be a smart and canny master of your own destiny.
Card 6. The sixth card, The Four Pentacles, reassures that sufficient wealth will slowly come to you and will be kept until the end of your life. Allow this card to comfort you and build you a platform of confidence from which to step forth strongly.
Card 7. The seventh card represents the current attitude one may be in. The card that I drew, The Ten Swords, suggest that you are perhaps expecting a certain amount of both gains and losses, of quiet times and struggles. You will be, it says, your own worst enemy. Allow things to flow more freely without resisting the inevitable. But also feel a stronger sense of confidence in your deliberate actions.
Card 8. The eighth card that I drew for us is The Master of the Scepter and is about your interaction with others around you. You must either look for a powerful protector to succeed and or be the powerful protector of others.
Card 9. Card nine represents our inner emotions. The Chariot of Osiris shows a warrior riding a chariot which signifies that the ambitions of the warrior have been realised through his will conquering every obstacle. We will be tested, the card says, but come out victorious. The card means “that the empire of the world belongs to those who possess the sovereignty of mind; that is to say the Light which reveals all the mysteries of life.
Card 10. The tenth card that I drew, perhaps rather handily, has nothing on it at all! I have not read the cards properly for so long that I can’t remember whether this is supposed to mean something or just that for some unknown reason the publishers of the pack enclosed some blanks (perhaps the box was a bit too big?).
What does this all mean? That it’s always good to reflect on our life a little and become aware of the ways in which we’re acting
As this last card is supposed to be a final result or summary of what has come before then in a way it seems fitting that this card should be blank. As I said before, it is my feeling that the cards empower us with more control over our own destiny and merely help us to see what we may not have seen otherwise.
Sure, a talented reader will gain some rapport with the person whose cards they are reading that will enable them to insist in the insight. But surely what we all need in our own lives are some pertinent reminders, some words of eternal wisdom and an injection of directional energy.
It certainly gave me a few things to think about and has encouraged me to adjust a couple of things in a very beneficial way. I hope there was a helpful message in there for you too.
